How We Live in the Summer: Morning Rituals, Design Inspiration & Family Moments

Summer is more than just a season—it’s a way of living. At Sage, our creative energy is deeply rooted in how we live outside the studio. The sun, salt air, and slow days with our families fuel the way we design for our clients—and ourselves. Whether we’re barefoot on the sand, hosting impromptu backyard dinners, or road-tripping up the coast, these moments shape our aesthetic and inspire the soul of our work.

In this post, we’re sharing a behind-the-scenes look at the coastal rituals and summer moments that keep us inspired all season long—plus a few tips for bringing that effortless summer feeling into your own home.

Mornings at the Beach

My son goes to school right around the corner from the beach, so when I can I do a walk on the beach before opening up the shop. The early morning light casting reflections on the water sets the tone for the day. The sandy landscape, dotted with beachcombers and families, offers a vibrant backdrop for more than just relaxation. These moments inspire our design philosophy, emphasizing light, airy spaces that blend indoor comfort with the outdoor world. The colors, textures, and feeling of open space inform how we think about modern coastal interior design—think soft neutrals, layered linens, and natural materials that feel breezy and grounded.

Design Tip: Incorporate elements like raw wood, woven textures, and ocean-inspired color palettes (hello sea glass green and sandy beige) to evoke the serenity of a beach morning in your interiors.

Outdoor Living, Elevated

Summer is all about living outside. We love turning our patio, porches, and even front steps into spaces that feel just as considered as the inside of a home. While most of the time our outdoor dinners are thrown together and nothing fancy- just the act of moving outside, lighting some candles and enjoying a meal together feels luxury enough.

Design Tip: Add an indoor-outdoor rug, lightweight slipcovered cushions, and a few oversized potted plants to extend your living space into the outdoors.

Time With Family: The Heart of It All

As designers, we’re always thinking about how a space supports real life—which, in summer, means popsicles on porches, beach towels on hooks, and open doors that never stay closed for long.

Our kids are always with us, whether we’re camping under the stars or skateboarding at golden hour. This lifestyle reminds us that good design should be flexible, durable, and warm—not perfect, but lived in.

Design Tip: Choose fabrics and finishes that are kid- and pet-friendly without sacrificing beauty. Performance fabrics, wipeable surfaces, and low-maintenance finishes are your summer best friends.
